Masaba Gupta has certainly established her name as one of India’s most promising and talented new designers. She studied fashion designing and within two years of her showcasing at Lakme Fashion Week, this youthful designer has been successful in making an impact in the fashion scene with her quirky, ye feminine drapes and silhouettes. Masaba prefers organic fabrics enhancing them with classic weaves, patchwork, and vibrant colors.
When she showcased her collection at GenNext fashion show at Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) 2009, Masaba’s collection turned heads with its vibrant colors and bold patterns. She also won the “Most Promising Designer” title. In the year 2010, she opened her flagship store in Mumbai.
In LFW 2011 for her summer/resort collection, she showed a collection inspired from the Masai tribes of Tanazania. She named the collection “Straight from my soil,” as she is half African.
With Masaba’s talent undeniable, she has blown away everyone’s mind away by being the youngest creative director in India as she takes on the role at Satya Paul! Masaba says that she hopes to take the Satya Paul brand to be youth.
“I hope to make it more relevant to the younger customer. Also I want to bring back the lyrical image that Satya Paul was famous for once it started off. I will incorporate the techniques and design sensibility that I have and merge it with the long-standing strong design aesthetic and signature of Satya Paul. Actually, the brand is older than me, so I feel it’s important that today’s fashionable youth should know more about Satya Paul prints, and can’t wait to create my own at the design studio! Satya Paul has a long iconic heritage of prints, and is known for its fearlessness with colors. As a designer, I will try to channel that in my way, thereby keeping to the Satya Paul Vocabulary, and creating my own design language out of it.”
Masaba made her debut for Satya Paul recently at Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week 2013. She had been working on this collection since last year. The lipstick took center stage of the collection; phone booths and ink stains adorned the rest of the collection. Peter pan collared blouses accompanied the saree as shifts, A-line dresses and midis made an appearance. Suspenders formed the key accessory for an ensemble that combined the maxi skirt with a cropped top. Another element of surprise came in the form of lipstick print vanity kits. “In order to make the collection youth-friendly, it is necessary to quirk things up a little,” she says.
Masaba presented her collection on day 2 at LFW summer/resort 2013 and it was absolutely printastic! The collection was largely monochrome with splashes of color. Floral appliqués on the sheer elements, dhoti pants, saris paired with coats, and basically easy separates that are all extremely wearable! Actress Parineeti Chopra opened and closed the show and lit up the ramp with her sunny smile and bopping shoulders!
Part of her design philosophy is to always be true to herself. Masaba Gupta is young and dynamic, and we know that she’s ready to take on the fashion world by storm!
